manner that a medical practitioner will have not only no difficulty in following the author, but also will positively enjoy reading him. The author first of all deals with the physics of radium: next the apparatus and means of application, then the sensitivity of the tissues to radium, and. proceeds to deal with malignant growths in various situations, which are suitable for radium therapy. The reviewer, from his own experience, can corroborate the views of the author, and would draw particular attention to the following cases cited by the author

Radium and Its Surgical Applications *From a Paper read at a Meeting of the Bristol Medico-Chirurgical Society held at the University of Bristol on 12th February, 1929.
The discovery of radium by Madame Curie in 1898 opened up a field of physical research the limits of which it is impossible to see. Although it was found at an early stage that radium had a definite action upon living tissues, this appeared to be purely destructive, and it is only recently that the selective action of radium upon cancer cells has been adequately demonstrated. Depending as it do...
متن کاملRadium: Its Therapeutic Uses in General Practice
This little book gives a short account of cases treated by the author with radium in the hope that it may draw the attention of the general practitioner and student to the conditions in which this valuable therapeutic agent may be of use. The first portion of the work is devoted to a short summary of the physical problems connected with radium, including apparatus, screening, methods of applica...
متن کاملApplication of zeolites for radium removal from mine water
For removal of radium from saline waters in Upper Silesian mines, several methods of purification have been developed. The most efficient one is based on application of barium chloride, which was implemented in full technical scale in two Polish coal mines several years ago. Very good results of purification have been achieved-the removal efficiency exceeding 95% of the initial activity. Anothe...
متن کاملRadium and radon exhalation studies of soil
Background: Everyone is exposed to radon because it is present everywhere with varying concentrations. Radon and its progeny are well established as lung carcinogenic. Materials and Methods: Track etch technique using LR-115 plastic track detectors has been used to measure the effective radium content and radon exhalation rates in soil samples collected from urban area of Etah district...
متن کاملRadium
This little volume deals briefly and completely with the properties of radium both from a therapeutic and physical point of view. Briefly dealing with the observations on the various phenomena which lead to the discovery of radium itself, the author passes to the physical properties of the element, and goes into the differentiation between the alpha, beta and gamma rays. The relationship existi...
